T
he Last Christmas
tells a story of Repairman Jack in Manhattan one late December, between the happenings of F. Paul Wilson's
Ground Zero
and
Fatal Error
.
J
ack has lost too many people close to him in the last year, and Armageddon is just around the corner. He's been in a funk, passing time at Julio's. An old friend, Scot Edward Burkes, shows up there, with a job for Jack, to
discreetly
find a missing
creature
who looks like '
a cross between a wolf and an ape
', on behalf of employees of the Bronx Zoo (a zoologist and a geneticist). Jack has a sense that '
something wicked this way comes
' and he's dead on.
I
n parallel with Jack's investigation, readers follow the antics of PI Tier Hill, who's puzzled by a low pitched hum he hears in a certain part of town, deafening near Sheep Meadow. Why does no one else hear it? Tier has taken on a job for a sleazy client, Roland Apfel, to follow a woman, the mysterious Madame de Medici, and find out where she's hidden an ancient artifact he claims she'd stolen, the
Bagaq
.
T
hese seem like disparate plot threads but of course, Wilson eventually ties them together, after Madame de Medici hires Jack to keep the
Bagaq
safe. Like all Repairman Jack novels,
The Last Christmas
is engrossing, though perhaps best enjoyed by those already following the series.
