Here's a timely volume, Start Now!: You Can Make a Difference by Chelsea Clinton, written for ages seven to ten. In her Introduction, she tells her young audience that she hopes the book's information and stories 'will empower and inspire you to work on whatever captures your imagination.'

The first chapter, Water, Weather and Why We Don't Drink Our Poop, emphasizes the importance of water to the planet, and of clean water to humans. Clinton tells us about Missouri's Matti who fund-raised to build 'nine wells in seven countries.' The chapter also addresses air pollution and climate change. At the back of this (and subsequent) chapters are lists of ideas to Start Now!

Rhino Horns and Tiger Teeth Aren't Magical delves into endangered species, from tigers to coral. Hearts, Lungs and Why We Should All Wash Our Hands addresses how to make healthy choices. Food, Hunger and Why Vitamins Are Awesome analyses nutrition, hunger and malnutrition. Finally, Allies, Friends and Standing Up to Bullies gives tips on what to do about bullying and cyberbullying, that 'thrives in shadows.'

Start Now! would make an excellent holiday gift for any young wannabe activist in your life. I know exactly who my copy is going to.
