The story opens, 'Do you ever wonder where you fit? Could it be here? Or maybe over here? Oliver wondered too.' Readers wonder with Oliver, what kind of puzzle he might find himself in - something, exciting, wild, out of this world? He tries and keeps trying, but his colors and shape aren't quite right. So he keeps changing himself to fit in ... and eventually succeeds. When he realizes, 'if I can't be me, then what fun is it to fit in?', he removes his disguise and is alone again.
