Here's a modern feminist take on the Cinderella story, Davide Cali's Cinderella and the Furry Slippers, edgily illustrated by Raphaelle Barbanegre.

It starts out like the original - the poor little girl with the nasty stepmother and stepsisters; dreams of a 'prince on a white horse' saving her; wanting to go to the ball; and the call on a fairy godmother.

Though nothing the fairy godmother conjures up is quite as expected, Cinderella does get to the ball - where she catches the prince's eye for all the wrong reasons.

But it's all good, as Cinderella figures out what she really wants from life - it's not a 'lame prince' or 'fancy pink dresses' - and lives happily ever after, on her own terms.
