As A Pattern for Pepper opens we learn that 'Pepper needs a new dress for a very special occasion' and only the most perfect one will do! They shop at Mr. Taylor's, who takes Pepper's measurements and explains patterns to her.

They talk about herringbone, seersucker, tartan, houndstooth, ikat, argyle, pinstripe, dotted swiss, and toile, but none of them are right for Pepper. Of course, Mr. Taylor does find the perfect pattern (one of my favorites), but you'll have to read the book to find out what it is.

If you know a young designer, share this fascinating book with them - you might just both learn a thing or two about patterns and their origins.
