'Unfortunately, money doesn't come with a set of instructions. Many people learn how to use it – or lose it – by trial and error. They make mistakes and learn from their mistakes.' In this book for youngsters nine and older the author attempts to provide information that will create an understanding of money, hoping that this knowledge will assist the reader in using his or her hard earned cash. This readable, illustrated guide includes material on how money came into existence, how it has been used over the centuries, as well as how one should intelligently use and also save money. From learning how banks work to what caused the Great Depression and more recent Great Recession, there's information here that does more than just underscore the importance of saving and budgeting money. While younger readers may not be that interested in the Budget Control Act of 2011, the ins and outs of sequestration and the different types of real-estate loans, the general background Scott offers will assist teenagers in understanding some of the complexity involved in purchasing a house or managing government debt. This is not a hands-on workbook that explains the basics of acquiring money or saving it. While it is not appropriate for all levels of pre-teens and adolescents, it will work nicely with those who want a greater depth of understanding when it comes to financial matters. That being said, as a research tool Dollars & Sense is a valuable resource that every school library and public library should have on the shelf. Also I believe that adults will find this book illuminating as will curious teens.
