He skillfully combines all the elements that make a great British fantasy into a deep and twisting story, sure to hold readers' imaginations. There is magic in the world, but it must be controlled by Law and Lore to keep it out of evil hands. The controlling group in England is known as The Oversight, but their number has diminished to just five, or The Last Hand. Things change drastically, though, when a girl arrives under unusual circumstances, a girl who is one of them but comes with many secrets of her own. The girl, Lucy, also brings danger, and now The Oversight must defend themselves against various men who wish to break The Last Hand in order to remove Law and Lore. The Oversight is a very complex historical fantasy, full of magic and evil, with twists around every corner. Fletcher has created an atmosphere that lends itself well to this type of dark Victorian fantasy. He has also created very memorable characters who leap off the page. While some main plot points are resolved by the end of this book, others have barely been uncovered, leaving many mysteries for the rest of the trilogy. Fans of historical British fantasy cannot miss The Oversight. Charlie Fletcher has created the start of a trilogy that will fill the void for fans of Harry Potter and the like.
