Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse, gives young readers a picture book (aimed at seven to ten-year-olds) about ten-year-old Yannick's encounter with a famed artist in 1960s Provence, France.

Yannick is sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in southern France when his mother needs rest to recover from an operation. He is reluctant to go so his mother reads him a story set in Provence and shows him her book of renowned artist Paul Cézanne's paintings of the area.

In Provence, Yannick meets his beautiful (though bossy) fourteen-year-old cousin Amandine. He longs to win a smile from her during his stay. Though he works hard at the inn for most of the day, Yannick enjoys long morning rambles in the hills.

One evening a famous artist eats at the inn but Yannick doesn't know who he is and does something that enrages Amandine and then leaves her very sad. So he decides to do something about it and approaches 'the greatest painter in the world'.

Meeting Cézanne is a very sweet story that introduces young readers to a lovely part of the world and to some of the great artists who have painted there.
