It is the spring of 1908 and brothers Ed, Bill and Ted are about to embark on an exciting adventure of exploration. Their father has purchased a 16-foot Whitehall boat for the teenage boys, which they will use to sail San Francisco Bay.

Two years after the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, the Bay Area is changing as the recovery process goes forward. As they learn to handle their sailboat, which they christen Mermaid, the boys will get an up close look of the Great White Fleet that visits the bay and they'll have a brush with local bay pirates and even save new friends.

Carefully researched and calling on the author's own knowledge of San Francisco Bay, which he learned at the tiller of a sailboat as a youth, this novel will appeal to young readers who not only enjoy sailing but also have a desire to learn more about the past of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Born in Canada, the author grew up in the Bay Area and is a volunteer at the San Francisco Maritime Park.
