As they learn to handle their sailboat, which they christen Mermaid, the boys will get an up close look of the Great White Fleet that visits the bay and they'll have a brush with local bay pirates and even save new friends. Carefully researched and calling on the author's own knowledge of San Francisco Bay, which he learned at the tiller of a sailboat as a youth, this novel will appeal to young readers who not only enjoy sailing but also have a desire to learn more about the past of the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in Canada, the author grew up in the Bay Area and is a volunteer at the San Francisco Maritime Park.
