The simple theme centers on the many ways to tell a youngster that you love him or her. 'I love you like frogs love flies! I love you like mice love cheese! I love you like boots love splashing in puddles!' The rhymed text joins some likely and a few unlikely combinations like blowing wind and growing plants to stress the idea that the parent's love knows no limits and is totally unconditional. Although the simple narrative is fun, the real attraction of this volume are the wonderfully illustrations that picture the mother mouse and her baby in various situations. The pallet of colors leans towards autumn hues and the clothing the mice are wearing suggest the cooler weather that arrives in the fall. While most board books tend to be rather small, this one is quite a bit larger than average and that makes it even more fun and engaging. Here's a wonderful graphic way to say 'I love you' while settling your child down for sleep.
