With the Vietnam War being fought and Joshua Reed's dad a military recruiter, the family is continually moving around as the boy's father is posted from one place to another. When this novel opens, the family has just moved to a small community in the mountains of Pennsylvania and Josh is beginning to make new friends.

Importantly, though, the boy has finally been allowed to get a dog. Josh's new dog, Jack, has strange, glowing ears and, even more oddly, the dog seems to understand his new owner's feelings. As the boy and dog settle into their new home, Josh finds himself continually butting heads with one of the town's bullies.

At the same time, late night disturbances and dead animals begin showing up in the area and many people think Jack has something to do with it. It all comes to a shattering conclusion when Josh comes face to face with the cause of all the trouble. The boy who has given Josh so much trouble figures in the climactic scene, but it is Jack who saves the day and both youngster's lives.

There's nothing like a good boy and his dog story and Danette Haworth fashions this one from some of her own experiences growing up as a military brat. This is an excellent story for middle-grade readers that will keep them totally engaged from the opening page.
