Award-winning author/medical journalist Sherry North addresses children's understanding of cancer through Champ's Story: Dogs Get Cancer Too! Kathleen Rietz's illustrations are deep, soft and in bright colors, with details of facial expressions and actions.

After Cody runs his dog Champ through the paces of training for the agility show, the boy and his dog take a rest. While rubbing Champ's furred belly, Cody finds a strange lump. After an examination by the veterinarian, the diagnosis is cancer. She explains that 'Like people, a dog's body is made of tiny blobs called cells. Sometimes these cells grow the wrong way and make the body sick.' The vet explains to Cody that Champ will have good weeks and bad weeks. Cody at first blames himself as he begins to think maybe he fed Champ something that caused the illness.

Features at the back of the book include Understanding Cancer; a Cancer True or False quiz; and Coping with Cancer & Chemo. Sylvan Dell Publishing contributes a portion of profits from the sales of this book to the ASCEND Foundation, a non-profit organization, with a goal to bring cancer-related teaching for children into school systems. Author Sherry North donates a portion of her royalties to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
