Jagi Lamplighter's outstandingProspero's Daughter trilogy, a modern urban fantasy loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. Miranda is the eldest daughter of Prospero, head of a family whose immortality depends on her remaining a virgin Handmaiden of Eurynome (this gives her access to Water of Life). In her father's absence, Miranda runs Prospero Inc., established to protect Earth. She is served by invisible spirits of the air (who contracted with Prospero for a thousand years, in particular loyal gumshoe Mab. After Prospero went missing, Miranda was warned that Three Shadowed Ones would attack his offspring, seeking their Staffs of Power. She was courted by Prince Ferdinand of Naples and by elf lord Astreus Stormwind. Her mad brother Mephistopheles helped Miranda contact their siblings, and she learned her father's fate. And Astreus offered Miranda her heart's desire, the Book of Sibyl. In the second episode, everything that Miranda had always believed was challenged, even her parentage. She learned that demons were trapped in the family staffs, affecting personalities and breeding mistrust. And she suffered her worst nightmare, even before she and her siblings descended into Hell, seeking their father. There, Prospero's children were separated, all facing great peril, with a shrinking supply of Water of Life, and with mankind's very survival at stake. Prospero Regained details their gripping adventures in different levels of Hell (you have to love the cheer weasel), and finally delivers answers to all the questions that Miranda and readers have been asking. There are betrayals and sacrifices, hatred and redemption. And Miranda gets everything she deserves - and more in the uplifting, soul-satisfying ending. This series is not to be missed by any fan of the genre - highly recommended!
