My name is Amelia Earhart and I love to fly. During the 1920s, I set a number of flying records for speed, altitude, distance and solo flight. I am proud of all the things I accomplished, but perhaps my most publicized feat was my solo flight over the Atlantic Ocean in 1928. Up to that time I was the first woman and only the second person to ever make that flight in an airplane. This book is the story of that remarkable and dangerous flight. In this story you will take off with me in my red Vega airplane from a field in Newfoundland. We leave at 7:12 p.m., and 2,020 miles and nearly 15 hours later, we'll land in Northern Ireland. Along the way we'll have some pretty exciting adventures. We'll fly through a rain storm, the plane's altimeter will break, and we'll have problems with the wings icing. In fact, the wings will get so heavy that it will be hard to control the airplane. You'll experience with me the loneliness of flying solo and the thrill of finally seeing our destination appear on the horizon. And, after we have landed in a pasture, you will see me at a loss for words when a farmer runs up to the airplane. I'll smile and say, 'Hi. I've come from America.'
