Stink Moody has always wanted to set sail for a treasure island. Now, on a ferryboat to Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, Stink checks that he has all the necessities for a pirate's life, including the eye patch and red Jolly Roger (flag of a real pirate, Christopher Moody). 'Shiver me timbers!'

On the island the locals call Pirate Island, the siblings meet Scurvy Sam, who announces a real Treasure Hunt 'first thing in the morn.' They must figure out five clues, one at a time, and they really want to beat Tall Boy and Smart Girl from the ferry. They race to solve the clues - find a lighthouse, chat with a parrot, check out a pirate store and a pirate grave, and strike gold from a bell.

Though Judy Moody & Stink win the treasure hunt, they follow Pirate Rule Number Two - and make a couple of new friends. The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt is an engaging, brightly illustrated adventure that early readers will enjoy.
