Shirley Parenteau's Bears on Chairs, a story in verse charmingly illustrated in pale pastels by David Walker, is all about sharing limited resources.

It begins with 'Four small chairs / just right for bears. / Where is the bear / for each small chair?' Young readers are soon introduced to Calico Bear, Fuzzy Bear, Yellow Bear and Floppy Bear, as they seat themselves on the four chairs - and 'Not a bear / has to share.'

But what's this? Big Brown Bear shows up and there's not a chair 'for that big bear.' They try different solutions but none work until finally their experiments pay off and 'Now it's fair! / The bears all share!'

This sweet story has good lessons imbedded in it - about sharing limited resources, about persistence, and about group problem solving - from which we can all benefit.
