Satoshi Kitamura's Sheep in Wolves' Clothing is a cute picture book mystery, pitting naive sheep (the good guys) and their feline allies against the dishonest wolves who rob them.

It all begins with a sheepish plan to head to the beach for a last swim of the year. Two sheep head out of the meadow together and encounter a friend who joins them. After a car breakdown, they catch a ride on Captain Bleat's boat, and soon reach the beach.

When mini-golfing wolves offer to look after their coats while they swim, the sheep are grateful (and gullible). After their dip, the shivering sheep seek their lost coats. They track the wolves down, with help from Elliott Baa - Private Detective, and a cohort of rugby-playing cats.

The wolves end up tangled in wool and the sheep head home in wolves' clothing. It's all rather silly but tons of fun. And, with a little more text than is typical for picture books, Sheep in Wolves' Clothing is a good choice for early readers who are almost ready for chapter books.
