Folksinger, musician and storyteller George Ella Lyon has written a lullaby that she has transformed into a picture book. The ballad-like lyrics are soothing and mellifluous and are, of course, perfect for bedtime. In the book, a child is being put to bed by her parents, and the book reinforces that all creatures on earth must sleep, and that sleep is a good thing.

The author sings Sleepsong on her website. Now that I have heard the words in the book set to her folksy style of music, I prefer the words as a song. I think that the next time I read this book to my children, I will play the music in the background and they can follow along in the book with the pictures; however, the words in the book are in a slightly different order than the song lyrics on the website.

I adore the dreamlike watercolor illustrations, which blend vibrant colors with gentle shadows. To hear the author sing the song, you can log on to her website at GeorgeEllaLyon.com, click on books, then Sleepsong, and then you will see an icon allowing you to hear the song.
