I am not very familiar with Method Man and his music. However, I am pretty sure that his self-titled graphic novel is not the least bit autobiographical. Nonetheless, like many comics, it is a good tale of good versus evil with an all-too-human protagonist.

Peerless Poe is a Son of Cain and used to belong to an order known as the Method Men. Fed up with their rules – especially those regarding celibacy – he is now working on his own as a PI. However, when Lilith rises up with her band of evil spawn, his old boss contacts Poe because he is the only one who can help. Poe agrees to fight their ancient nemesis but cannot foresee the devastating final result.

Method Man is heavily rooted in Christian mythology, which may be a turn-off for some readers, but makes for a highly detailed back story to the fight between good and evil. Those readers who are sucked in by this tale will find a lot to like. Like many comic book protagonists today, Poe is easy to relate to because he is flawed. He left the order of the Method Men so that he could drink, smoke pot, have sex, and make money, yet he is not a bad guy – he does what is right when it is needed, which makes him likeable.

He is also not at peace with himself and the world, as is seen clearly through Sanford Greene's harsh and sometimes angry illustrations. This visual telling lines up nicely with Method Man's concept and David Atchison's script to make a solid graphic novel.
