Fifteen-year-old Maddie Crane's life in the wealthy town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts has been orchestrated by her mother to give her all the advantages of having the right friends. Maddie hangs out with the wealthiest, most beautiful - and the most spiteful - girls at school. She doesn't consider them friends, just part of a clique that includes her. Her grandmother Tess encourages Maddie to be more independent and stand up for herself, but Maddie is a follower.

Maddie wishes she had a real friend. When her aunt and cousin come to live with them Maddie hopes she'll find a companion in her cousin, but Cordelia is standoffish and uninterested. Tess tells them they must stick together. They've inherited the family gift. Tess often entertained Maddie with her stories about secret powers and the family gift.

Maddie's clique belongs to a not-so-secret society of select young women at Hawthorne Academy called the Sisters of Misery. Her friends are jealous of Cordelia's beauty, but eventually decide to initiate her into the Sisters of Misery. Maddie is anxious about what will happen on Misery Island where the initiation will take place, but her fear of losing her own place in the group keeps her silent. This modern gothic has everything. The evil antagonist, the shy young teenager and a wealthy clique who run the school.
