The developing relationship between Isabel and Sullivan parallels Isabel's progress in overcoming her fear of horses with Sullivan's help. Just as he trains her to trust the animal, she must also learn to trust him. But can he trust her with his secrets? Despite the fact that the heroine is, at times, rather whiny and exhibits spoiled-brat behavior, the feelings between the main characters appear genuine. It's easy to root for these two and follow the story to its satisfying conclusion. Readers will be clamoring to get their hands on the upcoming books, each dealing with a different Peninsula War hero.
