Hit and Run    by Lawrence Block Order:  USA  Can William Morrow, 2008 (2008) Hardcover Read an Excerpt     Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Once the reader gets past the fact that the protagonist is a hit man, Hit and Run is a really good read. Keller goes about his work as though he had a 9 to 5 job. He does what needs to be done and doesn't question the choices of the hits he makes. Just a job. If he wasn't doing it, someone else would. And he is good at what he does. Keller has become a wealthy man, who owns a valuable stamp collection and is about to embark on his last job. His contact Dot has set it up for him ... but it soon looks like Keller has been set up instead. The Governor of Ohio is assassinated and all the official agencies are looking for Keller. His photo is plastered everywhere all over the country, and he must avoid being noticed. Keller's happened on a good spot to hide out when he learns that Dot has been killed in a house fire. Thinking his hard won wealth is gone (she had invested it for him) and that his stamp collection is in someone else's hands, he starts over. Humbly, in a legitimate job. As with all of author Lawrence Block's books (which, fortunately for us, are many) humor stands out. Not belly splitting humor but written with class and finesse. One can't help like Block's work, be it one of his many series, a standalone or a short story. Readers can always count on a good plot, tight writing, the elements of humor and grace - and a very good read.
