hen William returns to Savannah, he finds Malaphia, his adopted daughter and a powerful voodoo priestess, guarding the bodies of Jack and his lover, Connie Jones. Connie entered the underworld of the dead in search of her son. She wants to reassure herself that he is happy. When Jack finds out he follows her to keep her safe. Thorne knows firsthand the danger of visiting the underworld, having made the that journey himself in the past. He cannot follow and risk the possibility that one or both might not come back.

alaphia agrees to help Connie cross over to find her son, but she has no intention of helping her return. Connie is a Malaysian princess and a vampire slayer whose destiny it is to rid the world of all vampires. If she returns, William and Jack will be in constant danger and Jack may be forced to kill the woman he loves.
