Well, he discusses and I listen. Hard to join in with fingers and instruments in your mouth. Anyway, he recommended an author to me, with whom I was unfamiliar - Greg Iles. I looked up his books and chose one. Dead Sleep is Iles' sixth novel and it's a good one. His work has been called diabolical; a tour de force of suspense; and we're told the pace is frenetic. You get the idea. Jordan Glass, a photojournalist, wanders into a Hong Kong art museum and discovers a painting of herself as she would look in death. Thus starts a whirlwind search for her identical twin sister who has been missing for eighteen months. The search takes her to the FBI, who reignite the search for her sister Jane. Her father also disappeared, during the war in Vietnam – she has that to deal with too. A trip to the Caribbean has her meeting a man who owns other paintings of the Sleeping Women, a series of portraits depicting women in a position of death. Someone is abducting the objects of the portraits and murdering them. Can Jordan find her sister? Dead or alive? Dead Sleep takes off running on the first page and doesn't stop until the reader is out of breath on the last page. The plot is convoluted and ingenious. Characters abound, with distinct personalities that are well fleshed out. This is an author to put on your must read list.
