T
he Case of the Roasted Onion
by Claudia Bishop, prolific author of the
Hemlock Falls Mysteries
, is the first of a promising new series featuring Dr. Austin McKenzie and his wife of many years, Madeline.
A
ustin is a large animal veterinarian who is getting on in years. He needs associates but also the money to pay them. Two possible interns appear, eager to learn, and willing to settle for room and board! This gives Austin and Madeline free time to investigate the sniper-like murders of several veterinarians - especially motivated after a potshot narrowly missed Austin.
E
xploring the world of show horses is fascinating. Anyone who has ever even dreamed of riding will see the other side of managing a stable. Not quite the same as the thrill of the ride. The plot of
Roasted Onion
is cleverly written with just enough characters to be interesting but not overwhelming. It's well worth the price of the book just to meet some of those characters, including Austin.
B
ishop writes with her sense of humor fully intact.
The Case of the Roasted Onion
is a fun book. And I'm lucky enough to have the next in this series at hand.
