T
owards the end of her senior year at high school, Indigo Skye works as a waitress for Carrera's Restaurant in Nine Mile Falls, Washington. Indigo loves waitressing. She insists that a waitress is what she wants to
be
, although no one seems to think waitressing is a career. Indigo considers waitressing a talent that includes giving nourishment and creating relationships.
I
ndigo works the morning shift. A group of friendly regulars (called the
irregulars
) come in for breakfast daily. One day a new customer pulls up to the curb on his orange Vespa, comes in and orders coffee. After that he shows up every day, orders coffee and stares out the window. He is always nice and smiles at Indigo, leaving a tip that's more than the coffee costs. He becomes known as the
Vespa guy
and the irregulars can't help guessing who he is and what he does.
O
ne day Indigo notices a pack of cigarettes in the Vespa guy's jacket pocket. Indigo is a person who speaks her mind so she gives him a lecture on smoking right there in the restaurant. All for his own good. He's not angry. He even opens up to her during the short time they have before her job requires her at another table.
I
ndigo is off when Vespa guy comes into Carrera's for the last time. He leaves an envelope for her. The envelope contains a check for over two million dollars. Indigo learns that with money comes power. Spending is fun, but not satisfying. When she finally goes off the deep end, she finds that the people who are there for her were always there for her.
C
aletti has created a character in
Indigo Skye
who will be remembered long after readers have forgotten the plot of
The Fortunes of Indigo Skye
. That's reason enough to visit Nine Miles Falls.
