Laura's adopted dad Jim is independently wealthy. She and Jim live on a Georgetown estate. Miles and her mother - who is the sister of Jim's now-dead lover - live in a carriage house at the back of the property. The cousins look so much alike, with their white-blond hair and rosy complexions, that they are often thought to be sisters. They do everything together except attend the same school. As they grow up Laura has a full social calendar and Miles has her books, which she prefers to people with the exception of Laura. During adolescence they grow apart. Laura fulfills her destiny as the wealthy daughter of a D.C. socialite and Miles slips into darkness with fast food and Hostess snacks to keep her company. At school she is called 8-Mile, meaning white trash with a wide load. She dyes her hair black, wears black clothes and hides in books and writing while her grades hit rock bottom. Occasionally Laura and Miles reunite in the tree house Jim built in the garden when they were younger, to enjoy a high brought on by a joint, Oxycotin or Percoset. They reunite further the year Laura graduates high school. Cohn follows Miles' stream of consciousness musings to write this emotion filled novel about the year Laura takes her own life. Left in darkness once again, Miles uses prescription drugs to dull her pain and depression. She becomes addicted and is surprised to find that her salvation lies in the people she thought cared the least. Miles is not the outgoing up type of protagonist you'll find in Cohn's Cyd Charisse novels, but she'll still win your heart.
