oining up with his good friend and colleague Sergeant Joe Klosterman, Hastings faces an unusually challenging case when a young lawyer is murdered and his companion is kidnapped. The

Cordelia Penmark - as Hastings will discover - has been grabbed by a ragtag crew of mismatched personalities whose disparate motivations go far beyond a simple ransom demand (which the abducted college senior's multi-billionaire father, Gene Penmark, can easily afford); the kidnappers have an agenda, and Cordelia - despite her attempts to ingratiate herself with her captors - seems increasingly powerless as a caught-in-the-middle victim.

ealing with the difficult Penmark family - including the father, divorced mother, and current stepmother - Hastings, as he pursues the murderers and kidnappers, has other obstacles and distractions: the FBI is involved in the case (and that usually spells
