All of a sudden, a man darts in front of their car. Grace is unable to avoid hitting him, and his injuries prove fatal. When the police arrive, they assume that Deborah was driving, and she doesn't bother to correct them, especially since Grace only has her learner's permit. Deborah convinces Grace that only the two of them need to know the truth - having no idea of the impact that this lie will have on her family. Before the accident, Deborah was already juggling a full plate. Her mother has recently passed away, and her father - who has never been easy to please - becomes even more difficult and disapproving after hearing of the accident. Deborah's dad is estranged from his other daughter, Jill, and Deborah is growing tired of acting as the peacemaker between her father and her sister. Deborah is a single mother to Grace and ten-year-old Dylan, who suffers from vision problems that are about to get worse. In addition, the victim was Grace's high school history teacher, and Grace's guilt over her secret, as well as the constant questioning of her classmates, soon becomes more than she can handle. On top of all this, it turns out that Deborah and Grace aren't the only ones with a secret; the victim was hiding a past that adds a major twist to the story. The Secret Between Us is an absorbing read from beginning to end. While I found a few aspects of the story to be a bit unrealistic, it did not keep me from enjoying this book. Barbara Delinsky has written another novel that will keep readers turning pages long into the night.
