This series is about an independent and strong-minded woman, Fremont Jones, in early 1900's America. It continues to improve. The earlier books were set in San Francisco, both before and after the 1906 earthquake. This newest entry transfers the action to Boston, where Fremont has gone to visit her dying father.

Day does an excellent job of portraying the city, both its physical layout and the customs of very proper Bostonians at the turn of the century. Fremont's partner (both business and romantic) is Russian 9migr9 Michael Archer. Their relationship is not a standard one, particularly for that period, and is well depicted.

Previous stories in the series have been weak on plot. This has improved and Beacon Street Mourning contains a nicely complex and satisfying mystery. All in all the book is an enjoyable read.
