Such is the theme of this memoir, Slash. Growing up in Los Angeles as Saul Hudson, the author's childhood passions of art and BMX racing were replaced the day he discovered a guitar that his grandmother had placed in a closet: 'Finding guitar was like finding myself and it defined me; It gave me a purpose.' Courtesy of a high school friend, he earned the nickname Slash. This book details Slash's journey in joining the legendary band, Guns 'N Roses - from answering an ad to writing songs to getting a record deal and beyond. Slash soon discovered that the entertainment industry is 'equal parts tedium for each moment of magic.' It didn't take long for the magic to fade. What no outsider could see was that, at times, the band was a train wreck waiting to happen. Slash candidly recalls his personal struggles with a variety of drugs, alcohol and women. After Guns 'N Roses begins to crumble, Slash seeks to find a creative outlet. He forms Slash's Snakepit and later becomes a part of the super group Velvet Revolver. Slash reveals to the reader that no one is immune to the trials of life, no matter how famous they may be. This memoir is full of raw emotion and displays a side of Slash that few have seen. Sober since 7-3-06, he sums it up nicely: 'I'm glad I found the strength to take the high road.'
