ady Cordelia Bannister is not happy that her family has decided it is time she should marry. Cordelia is the youngest of four daughters and by far the most stubborn. She is to marry American Daniel Sinclair. Knowing nothing about him, she devises a plan to get better acquainted. Disguised as her companion (her cousin Sarah), Cordelia sets off to extract information from Daniel's secretary, Warren Lewis. The problems begin when she discovers that she really likes the secretary, but knows that she must marry Daniel.

When Lady Cordelia's companion, Sarah, mistakes him for his secretary, he does nothing to correct her. He spends time with her and begins to have feelings for her. When Daniel tries to talk to his real secretary about it, he doesn't get any pity - Warren Lewis advises him to come clean. But Daniel has taken the farce too far and can't figure out how to get out of it. He is taken with Sarah, but is committed to marry Cordelia.
