I
enjoyed
Reflex
, Steven Gould's sequel to his 1992
Jumper
, but have not yet read that first episode starring Davy Rice, '
the world's only teleport
'. In advance of the
Jumper
movie to be released next year, Gould has now released
Jumper: Griffin's Story
, introducing an engaging character created for the movie and not in the original book - young Griffin O'Connor.
G
riff belongs to a close, loving family. His parents do all they can to protect the secret of his teleportation ability and keep him safe, via constant moves, homeschooling, and regular defensive drills. His dad drums four rules into him - and they keep the family safe right up to the day that Griff breaks several of them to escape a bully's attack. Assassins show up that same evening, leaving nine-year-old Griff orphaned, heartbroken, wounded, and on the run, after a
jump
into the desert.
W
hat follows is a most unusual coming of age story - that of a young man on the lam, with deadly killers (who're careless of collateral damage) on his trail for reasons that he cannot fathom. Fortunately, he can teleport, but must use the ability cautiously as his enemies include
Sensitives
who can tell when he
jumps
. Over the years, as Griff grows up (continuing homeschooling and keeping up his martial arts training), he makes friends around the world - and is stricken again and again when his presence in their lives exposes them to his enemies.
T
his story culminates in an episode of young love, betrayal and revenge. Griffin strkes back hard against his enemies, in the process learning more about them and the
paladins
who lead them - and also discovering that he's not the only
jumper
in the world. I enjoyed the new incursion into the
jumpers
' world in
Griffin's Story
and can't wait for the movie!
