Usually this series is set in medieval England. However this episode takes place in 1577 Scotland. With authentic historical background relating to foods, clothing and living conditions, Susanna Appleton is back with us solving another murder. Susanna's dear friend Catherine Glenelg is accused of murdering her mother-in-law and trying to disguise strangulation with a fall down a long flight of steps. There is one mitigating factor. Catherine has no memory of falling herself, at the same time the greatly disliked woman tumbled. Did Catherine in fact put her hands around the woman's throat in exasperation over her meddling? Catherine is doing her best to slip her daughter and eight-year-old son out of Scotland. The journey is fraught with danger. Susanna is in the middle of the fray, determined to clear Catherine's name. The Lady Appleton series is delightful, full of the language of the times. Emerson has researched that period for years, since she was a young schoolgirl. She must feel quite comfortable in her fictional medieval castles and homes. She manages, with the printed word, to create such believable scenes that they might have been painted in oils. Write on Kathy Lee Emerson. I keenly await your next book.
