For ten years Emily Dobbs and Marcie Carter have been friends and neighbors. Their kids grew up together and were best friends. Emily is a teacher at the local school and not much of a cook; Marcie on the other hand was involved in the PTA and baked constantly since she was home most of the day. Though Marcie and Emily were best friends almost immediately, the men never seemed to hit it off as well. Through years of the children's sleepovers, Emily's divorce, and trading neighborhood gossip, a strong friendship has formed.

Late one night, Marcie's world is shattered when detective Grady Rodriguez shows up at her house to arrest her son Evan for raping another college student. No one believes the charge until Grady and his partner Naomi Lansing start digging into the case. Not only do they hear stories from friends and other women that he dated, but they also discover that Emily's daughter Dani may be hiding a terrible secret.

Marcie is horrified at the charges being brought against her son but she has Emily for support, until she learns there may be some truth to the story. Marcie's husband is just intent on making sure Evan stays out of jail. But Marcie knows that Evan needs help and trouble brews in their marriage. To make matters worse, it seems that Emily is dating Detective Rodriguez, the very man who wants to see Marcie's son in jail. Can the friendship survive this tragic turn of events?

Sherryl Woods writes with passion about a realistic topic, her sensitivity flowing onto the pages to sculpt the story. Emily and Marcie have a strong friendship that could be blown apart by a secret. Mending Fences is a wonderfully written, poignant story that you won't want to miss.
