By day he spends time with eligible ladies and by night he is to be found searching his gardens with a shovel. Miss Sarah Moorehouse chaperones her beautiful widowed sister to Matthew's party. The women have read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and while discussing it in their literary club they came up with the idea to make their own perfect man. Each woman has the chore of getting a piece of clothing from a man at the party. Sarah is to collect Matthew's shirt. She sneaks in to his bedchamber and takes it. Startled when he comes back into the room, she hides behind the curtain but can't keep her eyes off him as he undresses for his bath. After she's caught red-handed, Matthew lets her keep the shirt. Sarah and Matthew keep meeting in the gardens and get to know each other quite well. Though Matthew seems to have fallen in love with her, he can't marry her unless he finds a way to pay off his debts. In turn, Sarah is helplessly in love with him but can't understand why Matthew would be interested in a plain spinster. They have shared secret fears and loves. Now they want to share their lives together, but can they find what they need in the garden, despite the fact that someone is watching their every move? Sleepless at Midnight is a delightful tale, with steamy romance, suspense and humor. When Matthew decides to pay Sarah back for watching his bath, it turns into a sensual scene. Sarah and Matthew are sweet characters whom you want to see swept away by romance. Jacquie D'Alessandro does not disappoint with this story; you will be turning the pages long into the night.
