Buying shoes is the only thing that brings Helene any joy, but just for spite, her husband has just canceled all of Helene's credit cards. Sandra Vanderslice also loves to shop for shoes, but since she suffers from agoraphobia, she is stuck in her apartment and resigned to purchasing all of her shoes online. Lorna Rafferty is another shoe addict who spends so much money on shoes that she has maxed out all of her credit cards. When Lorna realizes that she is in serious financial trouble, she decides to place an ad on Gregslist, looking for other women who 'love shoes but can't keep buying them,' and who 'wear a 7½ medium and are interested in swapping.' When Helene sees Lorna's ad, she jumps at the chance to spend time with women other than the boring ones she has to converse with at political functions. Sandra is also thrilled, as she is tired of living in fear and sees in this group a possible incentive to venture outside her apartment. Then there is Jocelyn Bowen, who has never really cared much about shoes. But Jocelyn works as a live-in nanny to the family from hell, and is desperately in need of something to do on her day off, that will allow her to escape from her overly demanding employer. Shoe Addicts Anonymous is the story of four women who originally meet to swap shoes, but end up creating lasting friendships and discovering a support system that was sorely lacking in their lives. Beth Harbison has written an enjoyable novel that will appeal to women, whether they wear Pradas or Payless. (Readers should note that this novel contains strong sexual language.)
