ifteen-year-old Kayla and her mother Marilyn are always on the move. They've moved five times in the last two years. Every time, Marilyn calls their move a
fresh start
. A fresh start would mean that she has given up booze forever. After every move, Kayla watches her mother's daily struggle to stay sober. Kayla hates her mother's drinking. As soon as she's eighteen, she's going to go her own way.
T
heir last move brings them from Dallas to an old trailer park in New Mexico. This move really could be different, because Kayla's grandmother is nearby in a nursing home. But when they go to visit her they find out she's at the funeral home instead.
T
hings go the way they usually do. Marilyn looks for a job while Kayla earns money training and walking dogs. Kayla is hired to train Coco - a short, scruffy Airedale and dachshund mix, with an attitude. Marilyn eventually gets a job as a cashier. They're both making friends and putting down roots. But how long will it be before Marilyn starts drinking again?
