I
stumbled across an older book of Anita Shreve's –
Where or When
– and spent hours of pleasurable reading. With Shreve, author of
The Pilot's Wife
, a reader can always be assured of a good read, older book or not.
S
ian Richards receives a letter from her first love. More than thirty years have passed since they saw each other. Both married now, they nevertheless decide to meet. An innocent reunion turns into a dangerous intimacy that could have ramifications on which they hadn't counted.
C
harles Callahan, Sian's childhood sweetheart, remembers only too well that they had spent just a week together at summer camp when they were fourteen. How could that turn into a lifetime of longing? Though he doesn't understand it, he gives in to his longing now that he has found her again. What can the future hold for them? Can they be together? Are they capable of hurting their loved ones by leaving them?
A
s always, Shreve has written a novel that makes readers stop and think about what they would do. Throw their previous lives away for an uncertain future? Or stay in their marriages and forever dream about what could have been?
