The most recent addition to Robin Jones Gunn's hit Sisterchicks series introduces us to sisters-in-law Jenna and Sue as they trek through Venice on a paid trip. They have taken on the duties of housekeeping and cooking for a group of male missionaries from around the world. In return, they get to stay in an almost-castle, sightsee in Venice, and eat all the gelato they can handle.

While the fifty-somethings are dealt a few difficult hands - the lack of any extra beds for them to sleep on, plumbing that goes off and on, and a complete deficiency of Italian language skills - they are still swept away by the beauty of the culture of Venice. Using an ongoing theme of God following them with 'goodness and mercy,' Jenna narrates the simple tale of travels with Sue; they both find themselves healed from years of pain while lost in a culture completely foreign to them.

The background of the ancient Italian city is perfect for this sweet story of Jenna and Sue; their experiences are ones we might recognize in our own lives or those of friends. While Gunn doesn't venture off the path of the known in her writing, she sticks with what she is good at, and I enjoy her style. As a fan of her Christy Miller young-adult series and Glenbrooke novels, I love seeing familiar characters pop up from old, beloved stories. The Sisterchicks could be you or me, and that is what makes these stories so endearing and so much fun to read.
