Mark Frost's Second Objective is his fifth novel and a powerful book. In the last throes of World War II, as the Allies are making their thrust into France to drive the Nazis back to their homeland, Hitler decides to mobilize a task force to outwit the approaching armies. He orders a division of specially trained men to counterattack and take the enemy by surprise.

What is not widely known is that he has also ordered a smaller unit of soldiers to execute another set of commands. Only those at the head of this division know what that second objective is. German soldiers with more than just a working knowledge of American speech are placed in this division and must blindly follow their superior officers to what could cause their demise but - they are told - might turn the tide of the war.

As well as being a compelling war story, this is an engrossing thriller that's hard to put down after the first chapter or two is read. Civilian and military life cross swords when a former NYPD detective is assigned to discover the killer of men who were definitely the victim of a murderer, not of enemy mortar. The characters are genuine, so that readers can get into the heads of men on both sides of the conflict and can feel their fear and anguish as the tension grows. Second Objective is a very good read.
