I watch them, but they've never noticed me – not anymore than they do anyone else.' In Wicked Lovely, there are two dimensions to Aislinn's world. Beyond the normal urban life around her is a beautiful and terrifying aspect that only she sees – a realm in which faeries co-exist with unsuspecting mortals. They are not your average fairy godmothers either. Many are rude and rowdy, ready to make trouble in any form. Ash bears the burden of the faery sight, inherited from her mother and grandmother, by pretending not to notice them. She follows rules made for the safety of those who have the sight: Rule #1: Don't ever attract faeries' attention. Rule #2: Don't answer invisible faeries. Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries. Now, after years of living successfully by those rules, Ash is being targeted. Faeries start following her around, looking at her with a new interest and making Ash very nervous. Knowing the cruel fates of mortals in the past who have caught the attention of the faeries is not comforting. Fearing for her life, Ash determines to discover what interest the faeries could have in her before they realize that she has an advantage over them. In this first novel, Melissa Marr shows the darker side of fairy tale fantasy. This is no happily-ever-after fairy tale, and it offers more than the usual good-versus-evil storyline. There is a depth to it that I wouldn't have expected in a young adult fantasy. Though the back cover states that this book is for ages twelve and up, I would recommend it for mature teens and adults due to some profanity and borderline sensuality. Overall I found Wicked Lovely intriguing and imaginative, an inspiring read.
