ineteen-year-old Ros Green moved back home with her parents, along with her baby Nate, in Palm Springs after the murder of her policeman husband Saul, who was also her high school sweetheart. Her parents are on a trip out of the country. Ros is back in college, studying Jewish history amongst other subjects - and she's beginning to have very strange dreams, of belonging to a family of secret Jews in Spain during the Inquisition.
T
he book opens with a bang, after Ros is shot outside her home, along with someone else. She survives but her companion does not. Handsome Detective Allan Pauls launches an investigation, but it's just the beginning of a series of violent incidents that seem to center on Ros and those close to her. She can't begin to imagine who could be targeting her and why. Her good friend and neighbor, Beth, believes the dreams can provide clues and that there could be a link to unresolved events in Ros's past life.
W
hen she begins to recognize different people from her current circumstances threatening her in her dreams, Ros wonders who she can trust - and she's right to do so. Though the perp's motivation didn't quite add up for me, I enjoyed
Past Crimes
as a gripping, fast-paced read with intriguing ideas on reincarnation.
