Dream When You're Feeling Blue
, Elizabeth Berg transports us back to 1943, when World War II was in full swing, coffee and sugar were a luxury, and sharing a bed with your siblings was not unusual.
A
t the center of this novel is the Heaney family. Every night, the Heaney sisters sit at the kitchen table to write letters of support to the men fighting overseas. Tish, who in her late teens is the youngest of the three girls, keeps busy writing to the many admirers she has met at USO dances. Louise, who is twenty years old and the middle sister, writes page after page to her fiancé Michael, who is in the Army.
T
he oldest is twenty-two year-old Kitty, whose boyfriend Julian is in the Marines. Kitty misses Julian terribly, but she finds that she doesn't have much to say when it comes time to write. When Kitty begins corresponding with Hank, a young man she meets at a USO dance, her words flow easily on paper and she begins to doubt her feelings for Julian. As the novel progresses, some significant events cause Kitty to wonder if a husband and children are what she really wants after all.
E
lizabeth Berg has penned a novel so rich with characters that I felt I was part of this family. Her descriptions of the daily occurrences in the Heaney household make for a wonderful read. The author has also written a heartfelt tribute to the young men who put their lives on the line for their country.
