Attorney Andy Carpenter, partner also in a dog rescue operation, discovers a golden retriever who is about to be put down. He takes the canine to court and wins a reprieve for him, before discovering that the dog was a witness to a murder five years previously. Andy then takes on the dog's owner, who has been found guilty of that murder and has spent five years in jail. Andy wins a new trial for the man and calls in all his markers to help in the defense of someone he feels got a bum deal. Andy is self-deprecating and an admitted coward. This, however, does not affect his 'little grey cells' as he gathers his team around him and presents the best case he can to the jury at the new trial. The dog plays a goodly part in the defense and is admittedly a real love, exuberant and joyful. Award-winning David Rosenfelt, is, with the publication of Play Dead, now the author of six books. Each and every one is a joy. Rosenfelt's humor as well as his writing ability is evident on every page. Also his love of dogs, especially the golden retriever.
