Lily Tyler thinks her life is going along smoothly. Her boyfriend Gerald is liked by her father and seems to be the only man her dog Doug will tolerate. She is convinced that Gerald will soon make partner at her father's firm and will then propose to her. Her friends think Gerald is a dud. Though they try to keep their feelings to themselves, occasionally a comment will pop out from one of them.

Brady Cole is a new tenant and Lily's neighbor in her father's apartment building. He introduces himself when an ex-girlfriend shows up, and Lily's first impression of him is not a good one. He has an instant attraction to Lily but feels he is safe from a relationship because it seems she has a jealous boyfriend - everyone who knows Lily keeps telling him to beware of the famous Doug. Brady is slightly amused when he discovers that Doug is her dog.

Brady and Lily walk on eggshells around each other because they both feel an attraction. Brady doesn't want to date right now, having had a surfeit of relationships based only on sex. When Gerald takes an extended business trip though, they end up spending more time together. They enjoy each other but Lily can't see Brady fitting into her neat life and winning her father's approval. And Brady knows Doug is out to get him, especially when he sees that Doug has chewed his motorcycle seat off and now he is missing shoes. Can they work through their issues and find true happiness and can Doug learn to like this man who will be in Lily's life?

Beware of Doug is a delightful romantic comedy. It's obvious to readers that Brady and Lily are hot together even before they realize it themselves. Doug the dog is a fantastic character and it is comical to share his thoughts when he is torturing Brady while trying to keep him away from Lily.
