Georgia's well-ordered life has recently been interrupted by the reappearance of Dakota's father, who wants to get to know his daughter and is secretly attempting to win Georgia back. Georgia is also trying to figure out why Cat Phillips, an old high school friend, is suddenly seeking her out, since neither woman has spoken to each other since graduation. Assisting Georgia in her store is Anita Lowenstein, a seventy-two-year-old widow, who acts as her mentor. Anita is flustered by recent attention from one Marty Popper, a charming older gentleman who owns a deli in the same building as the yarn store. And last but not least is Peri Gayle, who works part-time at Walker And Daughter, while taking fashion classes. Peri is busy designing her own line of pocketbooks. On a Friday evening when one of the regulars - Lucie Brennan, a freelance TV producer - decides to stick around and do her knitting at the store, the Friday Night Knitting Club is born. Darwin Chiu, who is not there to knit but to do her thesis research on women's studies, and K. C. Silverman, who is currently unemployed and trying to figure out what to do with her life, round out the group. As Friday nights become sacred to these women, who bond over coffee, gossip, and Dakota's culinary creations of sweets and treats, some very unlikely and lasting friendships are formed. I thoroughly enjoyed The Friday Night Knitting Club. The women (and men) in this book each have their own story to tell, and I enjoyed getting to know all of them. While I wish the author had chosen a different ending, I will highly recommend this book to anyone who will listen. Kate Jacobs is an author to watch.
