The Cat Who ...
series. Lilian Jackson Braun seems to have a never-ending selection of mystery scenarios for the Siamese cat of the title to indulge in. And Koko manages to alert his live-in companion Qwill whenever skullduggery is afoot.
T
he series offers light reading and is utterly delightful. As one who holds conversations with animals, I find the books charming and fun.
Q
will lives in Pickaxe, a fictional town that I can picture almost in its entirety – from Qwill's converted barn to the unattractive town hall. He's a journalist who inherited a fortune and created a fund to benefit Pickaxe. While writing his twice weekly column, he finds time to solve mysteries with Koko's help. Yum Yum is Koko's counterpart – more delicate than Koko, she prefers untying guests' shoelaces to solving mysteries.
K
oko develops a dislike for a guest and proceeds to keep Qwill guessing as to the cause of his animosity. As usual, Koko is proved right but the timing proves to be a bit off. I find the names chosen for the residents of the area almost as much fun as the plots - Fugtree stands out as does Klingenschoen.
