Casey Myers first wrote Walking fifteen years ago. Since then, he has been diagnosed with heart disease and while treatment was successful in unblocking his arteries, he still has the underlying condition. His doctors have stated unequivocally that his dedication to consistent exercise and healthy eating habits enabled him to have such a good outcome. In effect, he had trained his body to compensate for what would have already killed anyone else in this condition.

Now, at the age of seventy-nine, Myers has updated his practical guide to walking to include new statistical information, studies and anecdotes relevant to today. But his basic advice is still the same - that everyone is capable of walking and everyone should walk.

Walking is a guide to walking as a complete exercise program. Whether the goal is to lose weight or to get more exercise, walking is described as the perfect method. The book is divided into chapters that first explore the history of walking, then ways to train for walking, and the different types of walking. Chapters on health and weight loss are included, and discussions of walking techniques include illustrations of body movements.

The first edition of Walking was a good, sensible guide to exercise when it came out in 1992, and this updated edition is just as good. New facts and events over the last fifteen years make it more relevant to today, especially with the recent epidemic of obesity. I especially have found it useful, in light of the fact that I'm in my forties and have experienced a more difficult time with weight the last few years because of a slowing metabolism. I've always exercised and walked, but not consistently. This book stresses the importance of consistent walking.

I also am finding this book's advice for young people useful, as my overweight thirteen-year-old niece is going to be living with me beginning this summer, and has expressed a desire to lose weight. Walking is the perfect medicine for both of us, as we have a dog that loves walks too. I plan on putting this book to good use, and recommend it as a valuable exercise guide for anyone at any age.
