Rick Shefchik’s first mystery novel, Amen Corner, is placed at the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Twin Cities policeman Sam Skarda is to play in the Masters as an amateur for the thrill of his life. Unfortunately, events other than those connected to the tournament take precedence. The Masters Rules Committee Chairman is found – murdered. A New York Times columnist is next on the death list. Will there be others? And why? Sam is asked to help find the one responsible.

Could the killing spree be connected to the Masters itself? A person with a grudge? Or possibly one of the many protesters who demand that women be allowed as members of the Augusta National Golf Club?

Amen Corner is tightly written with believable characters – most with the reputation of the Masters first in their minds. The plot moves at a good pace, keeping the reader turning pages. The backdrop of the Golf Club seems lovely with its blooming flowers and brightly colored greens. Interesting behind the scenes events will please anyone who has ever watched the Masters or who is a golf buff.

This author's first novel seems to avoid the typical hesitancy of the novice – nor are there any dangling threads of storyline to be tucked away. The chase ends with a dramatic touch – almost too soon. I wanted more.
